Kerbal Space Program - Tutorial Moon Landing Engineering Style
To Minmus a Tutorial on how to land on a moon in kerbal space program, landing on Minmus is easy so it's a great place to learn landing technique before going on to the Mun. Getting to anywhere in Kerbal Space Program requires a little bit of knowledge but mostly experience, you first have to plan where you are going first so you can build a rocket that can get you there. For a moon landing like anything else you have to engineer your rockets in reverse, like return to Kerbin, next landing, getting to Minmus and lastly launch, this why rockets are modular or most commonly know as staged making sure each stage has enough thrust delta v and won't rapidly disassemble. Getting to Minmus is easy but you do have to adjust the angle of your orbit first, if you are more advanced with you rocket science then you could adjust your angle during launch saving fuel just by launching when Minmus orbit plane is in line with the launch site at the same angle, but if not don't worry you can adjust your angle while in orbit. Transferring to Minmus is easy just create a maneuver node until you get your intercept and burn though watch out Minmus encounters can be glitchy sometimes time accelerate can lock your encounter sometimes (not sure if bug). Now for the landing well when you get into orbit, find one of the flat areas create a node so your going to overshoot the landing area to compensate for landing burns, but be aware when you time accelerate Minmus will rotate under you so just adjust any maneuver node accordingly, when you heading down wait until your 10KM up then burn retrograde and reduce your speed to 100m/s, do the same at 5KM reduce speed to 50m/s, now wait until you get to 2KM and reduce your speed to 0m/s so you will just fall straight down, when you are just above 500M slowly burn to reduce you speed and when you get to 5m/s try and hold at around that and make sure you land at a speed less than 7m/s. You have landed congratulations unless you crash landed then congratulations you made it to Minmus. Return well this is easier than you think, get into orbit around Minmus then you want to reduce your speed in relation to Kerbin in other words minus is orbiting kerbin in one direction so you have to accelerate in the opposite direction on you Minmus orbit, do this and get your periapsis at least down under 20KM this should be about right for using the atmosphere for return just make sure you point the heat shield in the direction your going. Whazar your done you completed your mission and returned safely, now for the next mission!
