Catholic TV Mass Online October 2, 2022: 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Presider: Fr. John Puodziunas OFM Parish: Assumption BVM Province Choir: Heart of the Nation TEXT FROM THE HOMILY Lord how long do I cry? And you do not listen. That lament of the prophet Habakkuk. Lord, how long do I cry? You do not listen. He has done everything the Lord has asked him. He has been faithful. And still there is catastrophe. Destruction, ruin and violence. But this isn't an ancient lament for us to read in some old book. We are familiar with it ourselves. Consider here we are. We are people who pray. We go to church. We celebrate the sacraments. We are kind to family, friends, to even strangers. We have done our best in raising to be good people. We care for the sick and the dying. We clothe the naked. We feed the hungry when we can. We do all of this we do everything we think we should. And then someone in the family is diagnosed with terminal cancer. Why Lord? I've done my part. A family member loses their job. Why Lord? Why us? Our children leave the church that we so love. What is happening Lord? Violence continues to grow in our streets and our neighborhoods. Between nations. Poverty and hunger. Why is all of this happening? Lord how long do I cry? And you do not listen. When will you fix this? That's really what we're saying. When will you fix this for us? A young religious who was having a mission experience with mother Theresa and her sisters in Calcutta some years ago one day she came upon him and asked son, how can I help you? He said, mother, will you simply pray for clarity? Pray that I have clarity. Of course, isn't this what we'd like? We'd like clarity. We'd like answers. The young religious wanted clarity of his vocation. Mother Theresa grinned and laughed out loud. "Oh no, " she said. “I've never had clarity”, she said. I had to learn to trust God. I'll pray that you trust God. We would like faith to give us answers. We would like faith to make things clear. To fix all that is broken. But this is not faith. Faith is knowing that we and all this that we call life is really in God's hands and to trust that it truly is in God's hands. Knowing that the answers, the solutions and the fixes will not come from our human institutions, will not come from all that we do as human beings, will not come from science achievements nor from the vast treasuries of wealth that we amass. It may not even come from the church to tell you the truth. Trust that all is in God's hands. It is said of St. Pope John xxxiii that in the midst of the second Vatican council there was great chaos. A lot of disagreement. You can imagine people trying to figure out, we just didn't have the media to tell us about it. Someone asked him, holy father, how is it that you sleep at night? An honest question, no? How is it that you sleep? He says, oh very easily he said. I get into bed and I say, God this is your church. I'm going to bed now. (laughter) like the apostles asking to increase their faith. We pray that we can trust God more. Trust that all of this is in God's hands and all we need to do is persevere with the little things of living everyday life confident that all really is in God's hands.
