Presider: Fr. Chuck Hanel Parish: Queen of Apostles TEXT FROM THE GOSPEL AND HOMILY ~ October 8, 2023 The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, o Lord. Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people: "Hear another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a hedge around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a tower. Then he leased it to tenants and went on a journey. When vintage time drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to obtain his produce. But the tenants seized the servants and one they beat, another they killed, and a third they stoned. Again he sent other servants, more numerous than the first ones, but they treated them in the same way. Finally, he sent his son to them thinking, 'They will respect my son.' But when the tenants saw the son, they said to one another, 'This is the heir. Come, let us kill him and acquire his inheritance.' They seized him, threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. What will the owner of the vineyard do to those tenants when he comes?’ They answered him, "He will put those wretched men to a wretched death and lease his vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce at the proper times." Jesus said to them, "Did you never read the scriptures: the stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; by the Lord has this been done, and it is wonderful in our eyes? Therefore, I say to you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people that will produce its fruit." The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ. The vineyard is a powerful symbol in the bible. What it represents and what it produces. Even to this day if you travel to California or Germany or France or Italy, maybe one of the places you stop and tour is a vineyard and certainly hopefully you have an opportunity to sample some of the fruits of that vineyard. It just evokes a feeling of plenty and joy and happiness. Well in the readings for this Sunday vineyards are mentioned but they're disappointing. They don't produce the fruit of the vine like they were supposed to. Despite all of the work that goes in to making a vineyard. You can't just plant a few vines and then have it, have wine in the fall. You need to build irrigation systems, and as it says towers and clear land and it takes a lot of work in order to get that first crop. And in the first reading, despite all the work that God does to form his vineyard it produces sour grapes. All that work for nothing. Bad grapes. And of course God is very, very frustrated with that. Very disappointed and that represents Israel in its unfaithfulness. So the question and the challenge to us is, we have been entrusted with this beautiful creation that God has given us through no merit of our own. God gave us life. God put us here in this beautiful world. Are we going to use it to bear fruit? To bear fruit in our own lives, to care for it, and nurture it or do we selfishly take it upon ourselves as something that we own and we deserve? Hopefully we can be accountable to our loving God who has given us so much and calls us to bear fruit.
