This Much Needed Vaccine Stops Viral Transmission.
This video explains how the use of nasal vaccines for COVID-19 induce a mucosal immune response and result in long-term protection with induction of cross-reactive immunity against sarbecoviruses. You may be familiar with Flumist - the intranasal vaccine that we currently offer during flu seasons. Intranasal vaccines are quick, painless, and fairly easy to administer, but there have been some caveats with using this approach more broadly: In order to stimulate an appropriate immune response, intranasal vaccines cannot be used for immunocompromised people as they are "live" and not safe for this population. The use of an adjuvant would assist in strengthening the immune response and overall efficacy of such vaccines but adjuvants are not safe for intranasal administration. This video is a deep dive into the Yale study where they used both a stabilized spike protein, and also mRNA intranasally as a booster dose for COVID-19 to produce both mucosal and systemic immunity. The results are FASCINATING. This scientific breakthrough could change the way we approach vaccination for other illness like Influenza, RSV, and even Cystic Fibrosis. Hope you enjoy this - it's definitely a deep dive into some cutting edge science. #NasalVaccine #PrimeandSpike #Yale #mucosalimmunity #covid19 #covid19vaccine References: Unadjuvanted intranasal spike vaccine booster elicits robust protective mucosal immunity against sarbecoviruses: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.11...
