Chapter 1: Arrival Finally, I’ve arrived—Japan! I’m Kireno Valie, an 18-year-old from a diplomat family, which means I’ve traveled a lot—Egypt, China, Germany, Brazil, France, and more. Born in New York City, I’m half-American, half-Austrian, and I have spastic hemiplegia cerebral palsy, which affects the left side of my body. People treat me differently—some with kindness, as if I’m incapable, others with cruelty, making me feel isolated. I’ve learned to be independent, playing video games one-handed and typing quickly with a few fingers. In online games, some say, “You suck,” but I keep playing. When I was eight, my mother died in a plane crash on her way to Spain for a business trip. My father said lightning struck the wing. That was the last time I saw her.
