James Brenner, the primary suspect in the murder case of Dylan Rounds, appeared in a Utah courtroom on Monday. He entered the court wearing an orange jumpsuit, his hands handcuffed, and shackles around his ankles. During the hearing at the Box Elder County Courthouse, Brenner remained largely silent. When asked by Judge Brandon Maynard if he agreed with the proposed timeline for future hearings, Brenner replied with a simple "Yes." During the court hearing, Brenner's defense attorney requested the appointment of co-counsel to aid in the defense. Judge Maynard acknowledged the complexity of the case, as Brenner faces both state and federal charges. Due to the requirement of obtaining permission from federal authorities to transport Brenner for court proceedings, the next hearing, where a decision regarding a preliminary hearing will be made, has been scheduled for July 31.
