Area where the Speicher victims were killed STORYLINE Relatives and Shiite militiamen paid their respects on Tuesday to those whose bodies were found in a mass grave in Tikrit last week. The mass grave, believed to contain the bodies of Iraqi soldiers killed by Islamic State (IS) militants when they overran Camp Speicher military base last June, was discovered on Thursday. Abu Murtada al-Hachami said prayers at one of the grave sites where his late nephew is believed to have been buried and later lit candles in his memory. According to an Iraqi official, forensic teams started exhuming bodies from the mass grave on Monday. Kamil Amin, from Iraq's Human Rights Ministry, said work had begun on eight locations inside Tikrit's complex of presidential palaces, where much of the killing is believed to have taken place. IS militants overran Saddam Hussein's hometown last June, capturing around 1,700 soldiers as they were trying to leave the camp, an air base previously used by US troops on the outskirts of Tikrit. IS claimed to have killed the troops shortly afterward and posted videos purported to show their mass killings. The incident was one of the worst atrocities perpetrated by IS as it seized large swathes of northern and western Iraq. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: [email protected] (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
