THE DEMON CORE - A SHORT FILM ABOUT LOUIS SLOTIN

A dramatization of the final days of Louis Alexander Slotin, the physicist who sacrificed his own life in order to save his colleagues during a criticality incident in 1946 involving a plutonium core known as The Demon Core. Zachary Thurman: THE DEMON CORE tells the incredible true story of Canadian physicist Louis Alexander Slotin, whose tragic death while working on the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, New Mexico, remains a powerful but largely forgotten chapter of history. In 1946, during a failed plutonium core demonstration, Louis faced an unimaginable choice: sacrifice himself to save his colleagues or save himself and let everyone die. Without hesitation, he chose to lay down his life for his fellow scientists. Louis Slotin is the unsung American hero of WWII, and the infamous plutonium core would go on to be known as The Demon Core—the very title of this film. The filming process was grueling, but the incredible team behind this project exceeded my expectations. Through this collaboration, we all got a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity—to travel back in time and restore a story that history had forgotten. It is my hope that The Demon Core corrects this historical oversight and that everyone who watches the film remembers Louis Slotin’s name, carrying with them his legacy of bravery. When people look back at Los Alamos during WWII, I hope they think not only of Oppenheimer and his bomb but also of a group of “cowboy scientists” — young, fearless physicists determined to push the boundaries of science for the betterment of humankind, no matter the cost.
