Protesters placing black wreath against US Embassy wall STORYLINE: Turkish police blocked a group of about 150 protesters from approaching the US Embassy in Ankara, the country's capital, after days of protests. The protests in Turkey were sparked by the police break-up of a sit-in to prevent the demolition of a park in central Istanbul, but it spiralled into rallies by thousands denouncing what they say is the government's increasingly authoritarian form of governing and its meddling in people's lifestyles. They are also angered at what human rights groups have said is excessive use of force to disperse the protests. Levent Gok, an MP with the Republican People's Party (CHP), said a single tree had become "a symbol of freedom for everyone".
