A small village east of Ukraine's second largest city Kharkiv, Staryi Saltiv lies on the right bank of the Siverskyi Donets River which now separates Ukrainian and Russian forces. After they failed to capture Kharkiv, a Ukrainian counteroffensive forced Russian troops to retreat east of the river. The village of Staryi Saltiv was recaptured by Ukraine military about a week ago. The village is strategically important as the Staryi Saltiv Dam is one of the few bridges connecting the two banks of the river. While Ukrainian and Russian forces continue to fire at each other's positions across the river, residents seek refuge in basements. They told the Associated Press that Russian forces occupied the village for more than two months, and that they turned the local school into their base. The Red Cross delivered medicines to the few remaining residents, mostly old people. The village is largely empty after those who could fled. Natalya Fedorovna, the local veterinarian, is the only doctor who stayed in the village and helped as much as she could evacuating the sick with her own car and providing basic medications. Now she is helping the Red Cross in distributing the newly arrived medicines, desperately needed. "In time like this it's impossible to stand aside, everybody is helping with something," she said. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: Find out more about AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/HowWeWork Twitter: / ap_archive Facebook: / aparchives Instagram: / apnews You can license this story through AP Archive: http://www.aparchive.com/metadata/you...
