Abandoned wooden boat STORYLINE: More than 400 migrants have been rescued while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea in the past few days, an NGO operating a rescue vessel said on Wednesday. The NGO SOS Meditarranee said their ship, the Ocean Viking, sailing in the central Mediterranean Sea rescued 466 migrants between August 25 and 27 in ten different operations. Two pregnant women and four of their relatives, including a three-week-old baby, were evacuated for medical reasons, SOS Mediterranee said. Four-hundred-and-sixty migrants currently remain on board the Ocean Viking. "There is an overwhelming number of medical cases, including exhaustion, dehydration, generalized body pain, untreated infections," the NGO said. The Ocean Viking is now waiting for a port of disembarkation in Europe. According to the Italian Ministry of Interior 57,168 people have landed in Italy after crossing the central Mediterranean Sea in 2022. Over the same period 1,283 people have either died or went missing while attempting to cross from northern Africa to Europe, according to the United Nations International Organization for Migration.
