It's impossible to compare one family's open adoption relationship with another family's open adoption relationship because they are all unique and deserve to be treated as such. The basic goal is to maintain a connection that allows the children who joined their families through adoption to always have access to their roots, keeping a thread connected between birth and adoptive families (some have a tighter thread while others keep it looser) that show the adoptee that genuine love exists between all triad members and that everyone is worth trying for. Open adoption can be difficult because of the variety of personalities, varying life experiences, and the emotional nature of the relationship. The four adoptive parents in this video talk about their views on open adoption, what that means in their lives, how they've handled conflict, and the highs and lows that accompany such complex relationships. Everyone agrees there are varying degrees of openness in open adoption relationships and how there is no perfect scenario for everyone, but focusing on the welfare of the child is what's most important.
