Christ has placed a referee in our hearts — His peace. Whenever there is unrest within us, it is not a signal to change others, but an invitation to enter into dying with Christ. We cannot control people or situations. But we can choose the way of the cross. Only when we die to ourselves — in the same pattern Christ died to Himself — do we experience the peace of Christ ruling our hearts. That peace becomes our referee, guiding our responses, directing our steps, and guarding our hearts in every situation. This is not a complicated message. Jesus made it simple: “Pick up your cross and follow Me.” Anyone who loves anything more than Him — even the closest relationships — is not worthy of following Him. Dying to self is the doorway to peace. And surrender is the path that keeps us walking with Christ.
