Silent Hill 2 | 10 Star Run | Rebirth Ending | No Green Hyper Spray | 2 Saves

The chainsaw is a godsend (particularly on the second phase of the Eddie fight), and I suggest you use it. Silent Hill 2 doesn't penalize the use of NG+ weapons, so it's a self-imposed challenge to go without the Green Hyper Spray (you wouldn't have it before your first 10 star run anyway). I've done a few 10 star runs without NG+ weapons, and it's just needless hassle. Silent Hill 2 is very generous with its routing compared to Silent Hill 1. The time limit is far more generous at 3 hours, and you're given a lot of flexibility to kill enemies that infinitely respawn in the streets and meeting the 150 item count considering there are 271 in the game (allowing you to miss far more of them than Silent Hill 1 where it's 150/204 items). I tend to finish my shooting kills in the streets after the hospital, though I do get as many shooting kills as I can in the hospital itself to cut down on that. Guns have been moderately to severely nerfed from Silent Hill 1. The nerf to the rifle is the most egregious and it's practically worthless, but the clip on the handgun was cut down from 15 to 10, the shotgun fires very slowly and you can't walk while firing it. You also can't reload guns by just aiming. You either have to do a manual reload (try firing while empty or pressing the reload button/key you've assigned on PC) or reload from the inventory menu. Shots on downed enemies do not finish them off either. They really have to have their HP fully depleted. Shooting kills are a waste of time unless you use the shotgun. You can probably leave a margin of error of about 7 kills before the historical society and on comfortably. I don't like trying to get shooting kills off of Lying Figures, so I'm limited to 1 Creeper in the historical society plus some Mannequins (at least 2 but spawns in the basement vary) and 4 Abstract Daddies in the hotel. The radio is the most obvious tell that you've finished off an enemy by shooting, but Silent Hill 2 communicates how much health an enemy has remaining by the speed they're moving at. They'll slow down as they get closer to dying. I don't really route items, I just pick up whatever I see. Same with fighting kills where I just kill most of whatever's in the way (hence going over by 12). There's no reason to get the Rebirth ending. The Dog ending or UFO ending will suffice and allow you to skip the last 2 bosses, saving both time and potential damage. This is especially notable in the PC port where the bosses move much faster on Hard on PC compared to the other platforms it released on. Abusing the wall-bounce with the Great Knife on the final Pyramid Head encounter is essentially mandatory unless you feel like going for the 30 minute timeout. The last thing of note is that your save count doesn't affect your score on the PC port. I went ahead and decided to adhere to the 2 save limit. There are no continues in SH2, so I was about to have a heart attack by the time I saved for the first time at the catacomb. Having said that, the run went very smoothly. It's definitely something I could do without saving if I could work up the nerve, but I'm satisfied with this for now. Played on, as of 05/03/2023, the most recent release of the Enhanced Edition.
