Clara Maass and the Yellow Fever Experiment #history #medical #holdmybeer
Located in Newark New Jersey, you will find the Clara Maas Medical center, named for Jersey Girl and nurse, Clara Louise Maas, who in 1901 at 26 years old, participated in a Yellow Fever experiment in Cuba. As the oldest of nine children, Clara was a lifelong caregiver and volunteered to provide aid to casualties in the Spanish American War. However, the experiment was criminally rudimentary by modern – and even contemporary standards – and Clara contracted Yellow Fever, dying in August of 1901. She is remembered as a hero.
