It is shown to us as a memory as Ellie decides between leaving a what seems to be a beyond savable Joel or staying with him 'til the end and trying to save him anyway. We also get the full story of how she was bit in the mall and even more importantly who is Riley. And, even MORE importantly, who is Riley to Ellie. It was a beautiful snapshot of young love on the backdrop of the gorgeous and haunting 80's glow of an abandoned mall.
