CNN: ASIAN AMERICAN FEDERATION: NEARLY 500 ANTI-ASIAN BIAS INCIDENTS, HATE CRIMES LAST YEAR

CNN: Asian American Federation: There were nearly 500 anti-Asian bias incidents and hate crimes reported last year. Since the pandemic, racially charged attacks on Asian Americans have multiplied. Last week an Asian man was attacked in Los Angeles Koreatown. He was struck in the face and assailants told him he has the China virus and to go back to China. Thursday surveillance video footage captured an Asian man being stabbed in the back in Manhattan and New York Asian Americans gather this weekend to rise up against anti-Asian hate. CNN Legal Analyst Shan Wu recently wrote an powerful CNN Op-ed this week calling for prosecutors to charge anti-Asian violence as hate crimes. https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/25/opinio... It's more than just a crime- it's a hate crime- meaning it's motivated by racist hate and that hate itself needs to be held accountable. That's what the laws are for. The history of violence against Asian Americans in this country is important because there's a long history of violence against people of color, including Asians, that has been under prosecuted dating back to the 1800's when massacres and lynchings occurred. Even in the 1980's the very well known case of Vincent Chin, prosecuted at the state level, his defendants got a very light sentence and the Federal Civil Rights charge ultimately failed and didn't result in convictions. ..................................................................................................................................................................
