If you are looking for a dinner roll recipe to use for sliders or as a side to any meal, this is it! These rolls are tender, slightly sweet...absolutely delicious!! See recipe below. OLD-FASHIONED PAN ROLLS ** (see note below)** 1/4 cup sugar 4 tablespoons butter 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 pkg instant dry yeast 1/2 cup water 1 and 1/2 cups flour Combine the water and butter and heat until butter is very soft. Does not need to be fully melted. Next, combine all the above ingredients in a very large mixing bowl. Use an electric hand mixer to combine the ingredients and beat until the flour is well incorporated. Add one small or 1/2 large beaten egg. Mix well with mixer. Grease a large bowl and set aside. Grease an 8 x 8-inch pan and set aside. Either in the work bowl or on a floured counter work in an additional 1 and 1/2 cups to 2 cups of flour by kneading. I learned to do the in the bowl method by watching Amy Maryon on You Tube and love it! But you can do it the traditional way of lightly sprinkling flour on the counter or on a large cutting board. Add the additional flour 1/4 cup at a time and knead the dough until it is soft and smooth. Transfer the dough into a well greased bowl and either wrap tightly with saran wrap and refrigerate, or cover with towel and let set at room temperature until doubled (or until two fingers pressed lightly into the dough leave an impression). Preheat oven to 400 F. Cut and roll dough into 12 equal portions. Place in greased pan. Cover and let rise until doubled...about 40 minutes. Bake for 14 to 18 minutes, or until tops of rolls are firm and golden brown. Brush with melted butter and serve warm. These rolls freeze beautifully. Can be reheated by wrapping in paper towel and reheating in microwave for 20 to 30 seconds. This recipe makes one dozen rolls. Extras freeze well for up to a month. Simply wrap the rolls in foil or parchment paper and place in freezer bag. *** THIS IS HALF THE RECIPE***. Here are the ingredients for the full recipe which makes about two and 1/2 dozen: 1/2 cup sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 2 packages instant dry yeast about 1 1/2 cups water 1 stick of unsalted butter about 6 cups of flour 1 large egg, well beaten melted butter or oil to brush baked rolls Follow the directions as for the half recipe.
