Analyst on UK parliament vote to reject election

(28 Oct 2019) UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will continue to push for an election despite MPs voting against a December election on Monday night. He needed two thirds to back his election but only 299 voted for the move. Johnson will now publish a bill on Tuesday that will only need a simple majority - not two thirds as required on Monday's attempt. However, he will still need support from the Liberal Democrats and the Scottish National Party for it to pass. Analyst Tony Travers, of the London School of Economics, described the latest moves and counter moves as an "ongoing drama." The vote came after Johnson officially accepted the European Union's offer of a Brexit extension to January 31.   The UK was due to leave the EU on October 31.
