Saving money in the military can be tough for a lot of reasons, one being that it's never really talked about among military members. Whatever the reason, the best way to get to your first $10,000 saved is to break down the goal into smaller achievable bits. Step 1: Open up a high-yield savings account I recommend opening up a SoFi account with my link above to get free money when you set up direct deposit. You'll get a lot more savings interest for your money compared to traditional banking platforms like Navy Federal and Frontwave. Step 2: Pay yourself first Every time you get paid, you should automatically “pay yourself” whatever cushion you have after necessary expenses. Then, you can spend whatever is left. This is so you always have money left over each month for your savings goals. Step 3: Calculate how much you need to save every month to get $10,000 in 1 year To save $10,000 in 1 year, all you have to do is save $833 per month, or $417 each paycheck if you get paid every 1st and 15th. Step 4: Track your money Nowadays, it's super easy to create a free account with an online money platform that combines all of your accounts and credit cards into one account. From there, you can see exactly how much money is going in and out every day and make better decisions on what you can cut out to save more. Steps 5 & 6 are optional for all the motivated military members and veterans who want to make even more money once they have saved $10,000.
