On this third Sunday of Advent, we continued our exploration of the "Power of Yes" using materials from Church Anew. We considered how Matthew’s story of Jesus’ birth focuses on the role of Joseph, a man who is without prestige, and unknown, who hears and receives the Word of God. It is Joseph who says YES when God CHOOSES to become, Emmanuel God WITH US as a brown skinned, vulnerable baby, born to poor parents. Parents living under the whims & laws of a powerful regime; Parents who will soon be refuges and foreigners. And, how, as we light the joy candle, joy might not have been the word that was foremost in Joseph's mind.
