The monospot or mononucleosis spot test is mainly used to test for mononucleosis. Mononucleosis is a highly contagious and serious infection caused by the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). The virus is found in the saliva of an infected person and spreads to a healthy person through direct contact, such as kissing or sharing utensils. Symptoms start appearing four to six weeks after the virus enters the body of a healthy person. Symptoms usually subside within one or two months, although in many cases symptoms may persist for a few weeks. The body of the infected person begins to produce heterophil antibodies to fight the infection. The monospot test is used to detect these antibodies in your blood sample. What is a mono (mononucleosis) test done for? Your doctor may recommend this test if you have symptoms of mononucleosis. Some of the main symptoms are: Extreme fatigue Skin rash Stomach discomfort Persistent fever Headache Muscle swelling Swollen lymph nodes Swollen glands in the neck or armpits Enlarged spleen Loss of appetite (or reduced appetite) It is important to note that most people develop several of the above symptoms at once, while some people may have fewer symptoms.
