How to make Kollyva/Kolliva with spiritual and scriptural explanation
Kolliva is a commemorative bowl of wheat offered in the memorial service at the end of the Divine Liturgy on behalf our dearly departed at different periods of time, for example; 40 days since their repose or during Saturday of souls, in Eastern Orthodox churches. Kolliva represents the resurrection that is to come, as St Paul says “what you sow does not come to life unless it dies” (I Corinthians 15:36), and St. John, “unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit” (John 12:24). The wheat in the kolliva bowl is buried under the layer of sugar, like soil, with the hope that it regenerates into fruit, that is, the resurrection. Therefore, we can appreciate death in a new light, without death there is no resurrection, and resurrection means eternal life within the Kingdom of God. This was done for my godfather and uncle, eternal be his memory. #kollyva #kolliva #orthodoxchurch #catholic #christian #bible #funeral #prayer #candle #jesus
