Imphal's women vendors confront cops amid demand for 'Assam-like NRC' in Manipur

Protesters demanding implementation of the NRC tried to storm Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh's house in Babupara. This time, representatives of six students' unions were joined by women vendors of 4 Khwairamband Ima markets as protesters numbering in the hundreds hit the market area. An intense scuffle broke out when police intercepted the march at the Eastern Kangla Gate amid escalating tensions. The protesters claim that Manipur's demography has been threatened due to the high influx of illegal immigrants from Myanmar, Bangladesh and Nepal. Similar scenes had played out in the Manipur capital on March 13, when protesters tried to storm the residences of Chief Minister Biren Singh and Governor Anusuiya Uikey. A few days later, on March 17, representatives of student unions AMSU, ANSAM, MSF, DESAM and KSA reached New Delhi, where they held a demonstration in front of Jantar Mantar raising the demand. Meanwhile, the 6 agitating student bodies have submitted a memorandum to the Centre demanding an Assam-like NRC in Manipur. #EastMojo #EastStory #northeastindia #manipur #nrc #imphal ***** Subscribe:    / @eastmojoofficial   ***** Visit our website: https://www.eastmojo.com/ Facebook:   / eastmojo   Twitter:   / eastmojo   Instagram:   / east.mojo   *****
