Viable Unknowns - Research meets Theater
🎭️🥼Our researcher Amalia Calderón Argelich from the Barcelona Lab for Urban Environmental Justice and Sustainability (bcnuej.org), in collaboration with @uabbarcelona’s ISOR research group, are exploring creative ways to address urban inequalities, using performance as a tool for marginalized communities to share their experiences and imagine sustainable urban futures. VIABLE UNKNOWNS is a project designed to explore and manifest the concept of sustainable coexistence in European urban settings through the lens of theatre and performance. It is about exploring possibilities that have not yet been realised but hold the potential for transformation and positive change, with the aim of bridging the worlds of theatre, research, activism, and advocacy to project, on stage, feasible and desirable futures. Through research and activism, BCNUEJ examines how social and environmental injustices shape our cities—whether through housing displacement, green gentrification, or public health disparities. ISOR adds another dimension, analyzing how religion, culture, and migration influence urban life and social cohesion. By bringing these perspectives together, the VIABLE UNKNOWNS project blends art, research, and community engagement to co-create cities that are not only sustainable but truly just. 📽️✨Watch the video to see Amalia explain what inspired the project's name, and to learn more.
