http://arts.byu.edu/events/5580/ DANCE IN CONCERT 40TH ANNIVERSARY Nathan Balser, artistic director Feb. 20-21, 7:30 pm Feb. 21, 2:00 pm Celebrate the history of contemporary dance at BYU with this program of dances honoring the music nearest and dearest to us; the music that got us through break ups, cemented friendships, and aided our infatuations. Combined with the artistry of the BYU Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of Mark Ammons, and solo artist Nick Sales, not to mention the talents of alumni dancers from years past, this concert promises to offer something for everyone. The program features several premieres, including “Fold Here,” by nationally known choreographer and guest artist Lindsey Mathies, a piece that combines current, cutting edge music with the sweeping music of the MGM movie musicals. The work of international choreographer Ihsan Rustem returns to the BYU stage with his own personal take on combining art, dance, and popular music. In his exploration of “what we want to leave behind,” the students dance to music by Icelandic artist, Jonsi, Provo Band Book on Tape Worm, and pop artist, Beyonce. Alumna Amy Markgraf Jacobsen will be sharing a new piece danced by BYU Contemporary Alumni. And local urban artist, Jeffrey Louizia will be presenting “Sunday Morning,” a new hip hop piece for the company to the music of C2C. BYU faculty will also be premiering three new pieces. Shayla Bott, ballet faculty, premieres a new work entitled “Rock, Paper, Silence” which combines the artistry of Fleetwood Mac, Weezer, and the photography of Ryan Muirhead. Nathan Balser, artistic director of CDT, shares a new piece entitled “Carrying Samsonite.” And Joni Tuttle McDonald shares a new quartet with us inspired by an intriguing cover of one of the greatest Indie Alternative songs of the 80s—500 Miles. Lighting design by Michael Handley, sound design by Troy Sales, costume design by Dawn Maughan, and set and prop design by Mark Ohran overseen by Benjamin Sanders and stage manager, Crysta Powell.
