These shepherds were likely involved in overseeing flocks destined for sacrifice in the Temple, adding a layer of symbolism to their role in receiving the news of Jesus, the Lamb of God. The angelic announcement is accompanied by the glory of the Lord, creating a supernatural and overwhelming experience for the shepherds. The message is clear: "Do not be afraid. I bring you good tidings of great joy, for there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord." Significance of the Angelic Message: The declaration of a Saviour born in Bethlehem carries profound significance. The term "Christ the Lord" affirms the deity of the Messiah, emphasizing that the Lord Himself has come. The sign provided to the shepherds, a baby lying in a manger, holds a specific symbolism. Widespread Sharing: Upon finding the baby, Mary, and Joseph, the shepherds don't keep this incredible news to themselves. They make widely known the saying told to them concerning the Child. Pondering in the Heart: Mary, in contrast, chooses to ponder these events in her heart, reflecting on the significance of the Messiah's birth. Comparison with the Wise Men: A distinction is drawn between the response of the shepherds and the wise men. The wise men brought gifts, appropriate for a king, while the shepherds offered praise and testimony, acknowledging Jesus as the Saviour. The shepherds' response models immediate faith, prompt action, and widespread sharing of the good news. Conclusion: The shepherds' response to the birth of Jesus serves as a model for believers.
