Stephanie Hamm was a mom of adopted child Garrett, Mia’s brother, who was a teenager when he was diagnosed in 1987 in a rural community in north Texas. With no internet to do research, even the doctors had never seen a bone marrow failure disease. You may have seen the article by today,about Mia’s Hamm’s brother in Today not long ago. Jillian Stewart was a teenager when she was diagnosed with a blood disease called paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria and tried many different treatments would work for a while but hen fail. She was constantly having to go through a transfusion. Because Stephanie and her husband wanted to help families avoid having to go through what they did, AAMDS and the Annual March for Marrow was born! For Jillian the NMDP connected with her match in 2023 and she was able to schedule a transplant! Every year I get to be the celebrity officiant that shoots the starting gun to start the race and hangs the medals on the winning necks!! And of course I get to interview the AAMDS champion for this year, who is Jillian!
