Live Replay: Parliament to review measures taken to tackle UK Covid-19 spike

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has promised MPs votes "wherever possible" on England or UK-wide coronavirus regulations before they come into force. However he warned: "We cannot hold up urgent regulations which are needed to control the virus and save lives." His move follows concern from Tory MPs over a lack of parliamentary scrutiny. Earlier on Wednesday, the Commons Speaker warned the government against treating Parliament with "contempt". Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Hancock said: "I am sure that no member of this House would want to limit the government's ability to take emergency action in the national interest as we did in March. Earlier, Prime Minister’s Questions saw Boris Johnson accused Keir Starmer and the Labour party of “sniping from the sidelines” on coronavirus issues. The two leaders went head-to-head in the Commons the day after the Prime Minister was forced to issue an apology after giving the incorrect information when asked to clarify his 'rule of six'. Mr Johnson had wrongly suggested that people in the North East could gather in groups larger than six in outdoor settings. However, this was wrong. Speaking from the Commons on Wednesday, Sir Keir said: "One of the major problems, as we've seen in the last 24 hours, is widespread confusion about the local restrictions and I don't just mean the Prime Minister not knowing his own rules - having sat opposite the Prime Minister at PMQs every week that didn't come as a surprise to me. In response, Mr Johnson said: "In spite of the efforts of the Leader of the Opposition continually trying to snipe from the sidelines to undermine what we are trying to do." At the start of PMQs, the Speaker of the House of Commons has refused to give Tory MPs a vote on new coronavirus laws - but the Government has tried to stave off revolt with an olive branch to rebels. Sir Lindsay Hoyle gave the Government a slap down for not giving MPs a say on emergency measures to fight the pandemic before they came into force but said an amendment risks undermining certainty in the laws.
