Roman numerals are a system of numbers that were used in ancient Rome, which employ combinations of letters from the Latin alphabet to signify values. Here's how to use them: Individual Symbols: Roman numerals use seven basic symbols: I, V, X, L, C, D, and M. Each of these symbols stands for a different number: I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, M=1000. Combining Symbols: You can combine symbols to create other numbers. For example, II is 2 and III is 3. Numbers like 6 (VI), 7 (VII), and 8 (VIII) are formed by adding I, II, or III to V. Subtraction Rule: When a smaller numeral appears before a larger one, it is subtracted. For example, IV is 4 (5-1), and IX is 9 (10-1). Adding Larger Numerals: When a larger numeral appears before a smaller one, it is added. For example, VI is 6 (5+1), and XI is 11 (10+1). Don't Repeat More than Three Times: A numeral can be repeated only three times. When you get to 4, you need to subtract from the next highest numeral: IV (4), not IIII. Similarly, 40 is XL, 90 is XC, 400 is CD, and 900 is CM. Higher Numbers: Numbers in the thousands are represented by adding an overline above a numeral. For instance, V̅ equals 5,000, X̅ equals 10,000, and so on. By understanding these rules and practicing, you can learn to read and write Roman numerals.
