Money Savers: Brooklyn Park city-wide garage sales
Bigger is better when it comes to garage sales. Brooklyn Park decided to promote its first city-wide garage sale this year and the list of registered sales just keeps growing. "The response has been phenomenal," said Amy Hanson, one of the organizers of the event. "I think the response is better than we thought because we haven't done it before, and see other cities have done it so why shouldn't we do it?" The Community Engagement Initiative decided offering a city-wide sale would create a way for neighbors to connect with one another. Planners hoped to register 50-75 sales, instead more than 160 sales are recorded. "People know community wide garage sales are publicized more than doing it themselves," said Hanson. Krista Myhre and her neighbors are taking advantage of the free publicity. After attending sales in other cities, Krista and her neighbors heard about the city-wide sale and signed up. They offer kid items, clothing, books and kitchen gadgets. "We knew that Brooklyn Park was having first annual garage sale, so we thought it was a good idea," said Myhre. "I think the work comes now, we are in the middle of setting up." The advertised days of the city-wide sale are May 16-18. To pick up a free map, stop by city hall, city offices, police departments, or the Zanewood Recreation Center. You can download one here on the city website. You can also download the free Garage Sale Rover app, where you can use GPS to drive between registered sales.
