This Belgian Malinois Was Meant to Protect Her, Now It's Dangerous | Better Human Better Dog S05E04

Shadow, an all-black Belgian Malinois, was adopted for protection. She has now bitten three people, including her own human. In this episode of Better Human Better Dog, I work with two families whose challenges look very different, but both come back to the same lesson: dogs need clear guidance, structure, and leadership. Bo got Shadow after surviving a robbery at gunpoint. She hoped Shadow would help her feel safe, but Shadow's protective behavior escalated into barking, lunging, and biting toward dogs, strangers, and even Bo herself. With three bites already behind them, Bo fears she may have to give Shadow up. Shadow is not an aggressive dog. She is responding to the fear and uncertainty around her, taking on a job Bo never meant to give her. Through calm direction, structure, and a safe introduction to my pack, Bo learns how to help Shadow relax, follow, and let go of the responsibility to protect. I also meet Ariana and Brandon, whose eight month old Min Pin mix, Alpha, reacts to dogs, people, strollers, and anything that moves. Alpha is not a dangerous dog. He is an excitable puppy without enough direction. At my ranch, I teach his humans how to create calm walks, guide instead of pull, and build the leadership Alpha needs before excitement becomes a lasting behavior problem.
