MMCA Performing related to Kim Kulim ○ Venue: MMCA Seoul B1, MMCA Multi-Project Hall ○ Date: September 7, Thursday, 14:00-15:30 ○ Program Film: The Meaning of 1/24 Second (1969), Civilization, Woman, Money (1969) Dance: Untitled (1969/2023) Music: A Grand Chorus (1969/2023) Theater: Unknown People (1969/2023) The performance of Kim Kulim, an interdisciplinary artist traversing diverse genres and artistic practices, took place at 2 p.m. on 7 September 2023, at MMCA Seoul’s Multi-Project Hall. Composed of a total of four parts that take the form of a film, dance, music, and theater, the work provided a tangible sense of Kim as a master of performance art. The program began with the screening of The Meaning of 1/24 Second (1969) and Civilization, Woman, Money (1969), two works that mark a significant moment in the history of Korean experimental film. These were followed by the dance, Untitled (the choreography, composition, and scenario of which were completed in 1969); the experimental music piece, A Grand Chorus; and the theater, Unknown People. Each part of the performance was 15 minutes long, and 70 performers presented experimental movement and sound to audiences. Artist Born in 1936 in Sangju, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Kim Kulim holds a significant status in Korean contemporary art history as one of the founders of Korean experimental art. Maintaining a rebellious attitude towards established values and customs, Kim has produced a wide scope of experimental works, including paintings, prints, sculptures, installations, performances, land art, video art, and mail art. He has also been consistently involved in experimental theaters, films, music, and dance.
