The British Isles were initially inhabited by the pre-Celtic beaker culture, but over time waves of Celtic-speaking people arrived from the European continent. In the 1st century AD, the Romans invaded and brought Roman customs and laws to the region, but eventually left in the early 5th century. A great migration of Germanic tribes followed, including the Anglo-Saxons who defeated the last Viking king and established the Kingdom of England. In the 11th century, the Danish conquered England briefly. Edward III asserted his claim to the French throne, starting the Hundred Years' War. James VI of Scotland became King of England in a Personal Union. The Glorious Revolution saw William III crowned king. The United Kingdom of Great Britain was formed in 1707.
