SpaceX starship booster explosion letest update | Elon Musk | spaceX NASA's SpaceX Starship is set to launch its first voyage into space on May 31st 2019, as Elon Musk's ambitious plan to make humanity a multi-planetary species moves closer to reality. SpaceX Starship's journey will begin at Boca Chica Beach in South Texas. Here, the rocket and its payload will separate, before heading out along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Once there, the vehicle will enter Low Earth Orbit, where it will take off, and continue towards the International Space Station (ISS). The SpaceX Starship's payload will consist of NASA astronaut Nick Hague, who will embark on his mission aboard the spacecraft. He will spend seven days on board the ship, testing everything from the craft's oxygen system to human habitation. Once he returns home, the astronaut will have flown around the world twice, completing a total distance of 5.8 million miles (9.4 million km). After his return, the SpaceX Starship will head back down to Florida, landing on land just outside Cape Canaveral. In February 2019, the company launched the first test flight of the vehicle, reaching speeds of 1,100km/h (684mph) – faster than any previous rocket designed to carry humans. Since then, Musk has been working hard to perfect the design of the spacecraft. On May 10th, the CEO revealed that the team had achieved full reusability, having successfully landed the vehicle on two consecutive flights. This achievement means that the vessel can now fly up to 6 times without needing to be refilled, making it significantly cheaper than traditional rockets. But even though the craft is reusable, Musk still expects customers to pay thousands of pounds for each trip to space. Musk said: "I think people underestimate how much we don't know about the physics of air breathing propulsion systems, and I am certain there are fundamental breakthroughs left to be discovered. "We do not yet fully understand the underlying thermodynamic principles of what makes a vacuum cleaner work. But we have figured out enough about combustion engines that we can actually build a car that goes 300 mph. We're pretty sure we can figure out how to get to Mars. There's no reason to believe we couldn't figure out how to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile..." If the rocket does manage to become successful, it could open up exciting possibilities in terms of space travel. But it will need to overcome a number of hurdles first. First, it will need to prove that it's safe to use, especially if it carries passengers. Second, it will need to compete with other companies trying to bring commercial travel into space. And third, it will need to convince the government that launching rockets is worth the investment. And while Musk says he hopes to send a person to Mars in the early 2030s, many experts doubt whether the vehicles will ever be able to achieve this kind of speed. Many say that they expect the US to continue developing nuclear rockets, like the Saturn V model flown by Apollo 11, until the end of the century. But Musk isn't worried. He told the New York Times that he thinks SpaceX's entry into the market will be met with success, despite the challenges ahead. He added: "Our goal with this vehicle is to create a self-sustaining city on Mars. If it works, it will be great. If it doesn't, it won't matter."
