Tips for Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade + Balloon Viewing 2024
Check out my insider tips for viewing this year's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and the balloon-inflating fun in New York City. LEE'S TIPS FOR BALLOON VIEWING: There is RAIN + WIND in the forecast for this year... West 77th Street to West 81st Street on Central Park West is where the balloons are being inflated. Viewing is on Wednesday from 1pm to 6pm. Entrance to balloon viewing: West 72nd Street + Columbus Avenue. Little Ones? Come early: 12:00pm to 2:30pm. It gets packed pretty early, and they've moved up the viewing window, no later in the evening. Bring cash/money for fun vendor items. Local food shops (use food apps): Lenwich, Shake Shack, Grubhub. There is usually a fun fair in the schoolyard on Columbus Avenue and West 77th Street. Bring a camera, charge it up! Could be done in half an hour before it gets crowded. If you're a member of the American Museum of Natural History, you might be able to view from there. LEE'S TIPS FOR WATCHING THE PARADE: Some people arrive as early as 5am - 6am. There are no porta-potties. Bring a chair + blanket. *And an umbrella this year!* Camp on the blocks anywhere from West 75th Street all the way south to West 61st Street on Central Park West. There are no bathrooms. There is a Starbuck's at West 73rd Street and Columbus Avenue--but no bathroom (BOO!) ; Lenwich at West 74th (there IS a bathroom). Once you are camped out in your spot, you won’t want to move. Bring a thermos, but time your intake of the fluids to match bathroom reachability (lol). Some people bring ladders. This is at your own risk. No parking. Best thing is to take the train: B, C, 1, 2, 3. Double-check MTA.info for transportation service updates and delays. Get your turkey accessories NOW so you’re ready for the big day! Bring a selfie stick to use it as a camera-raiser to get good pics!
