If you love eating turnips raw or cooked and wanted to grow organic turnips at home in containers, you are going to love this video. We are growing our turnips in old fruit baskets, first put some plastic sheet to cover the holes of baskets, make some drainage holes in the sheet. After making some holes in sheet its time to fill these baskets with soil mix. Best soil mix for growing turnips contains 50% organic fully decomposed compost or manure and 50% garden soil and nothing else. We are sowing only 8 seeds in one basket, keep the distance of 4 to 5 inches between each seed. Now sprinkle some water on the soil, do not drown your seeds in the water, just a little bit of water in required. Turnips love full sunlight, so keep your container in a place where they receive at least 6-7 hours of direct sunlight. Always thin your seedlings for better growth of plants. Turnips need more space as the size grow bigger with the passage of time. Keep your soil a little moist (not wet) almost every time for bigger turnips. Our turnip seedlings got attached by grasshoppers and mesquites, they pests came from grass around the containers. We just remove the grass and put some wood ash on the leaves and everything growing smoothly again. After just 54 days, our turnips are ready to harvest.
