This song belongs to a very small band of songs that Elvis performed live on stage before he then went on to record it in the studio. In the case of My Boy, Elvis first performed it on stage during his 6 August 1973, Las Vegas opening show but would not record it until 13 December of the same year, The studio version recorded during the second portion of Elvis’ legendary Stax sessions is fine heartfelt recording. The live versions are generally excellent but just lack that little piece of intimacy that can only be found in a studio recording. This particular excellent live rendition is sourced from Elvis’ quite superb 26 March 1975 Midnight Show in the main showroom of The Las Vegas Hilton.
