The word "righteous" is not in the original text. It was added in translations like the Targum and the LXX. Kimchi and Ben Melech connect this verse with Psalm 34:15, not 16. This verse is an expansion of verse 15. 15 The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry. The prayer of the righteous brings benefit. Zechariah and Elizabeth were righteous people who lived according to all the Lord's commandments and decrees (Luke 1:6). Their prayers were answered by John the Baptist, and they benefited Jesus' ministry of salvation. When the righteous Jacob prayed, Jesus, the mediator (Gen. 28:12; John 1:51), delivered him from tribulation and persecution. However, Esau, after giving up his birthright, ownership, citizenship, and inheritance, cried out in hope of blessings (Gen. 27:34, "Weeping aloud 6817"), but when he was abandoned, he became an adversary of redemption who tried to kill Jacob. The spirit that deceived, ruled, and opposed King Saul, King Absalom, Ahithophel, Athaliah (destroyed in 2 Kings 11:1, but = destroyed Abaddon), and King Herod is Abaddon (Destruction) (Revelation 9:11; Proverbs 15:11). The cries of the wicked do not bring benefit.
