As we near the culmination of Holy Week 2024 and begin the celebration of Easter, The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington invites you to join us via Livestream on Saturday, March 30, at 8:00 PM EDT as Wilton Cardinal Gregory, Archbishop of Washington, celebrates Holy Saturday's Easter Vigil in the Holy Night of Easter Mass from The Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington, DC, United States of America. This Vigil Mass will be celebrated in English and Spanish. Members of the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle's Schola Cantorum choir will accompany the Easter Vigil liturgy, ranked by the Church as "the mother of all vigils." Cardinal Gregory will be the Principal Celebrant and Homilist. At this beautiful Easter Vigil liturgy, the Cathedral will be darkened during the beginning of the Mass, but then Cardinal Gregory will light the Paschal Candle, which represents Christ bringing light to the world through His resurrection. Later in the Mass, numerous RCIA members will receive the Sacraments of Initiation and be fully welcomed into the Church! Please keep them, and all of the new initiates joining the Church worldwide this Easter in your prayers as we welcome them into new life in the Body of Christ! The summit of the liturgical year is the Easter Triduum, which begins on the evening of Holy Thursday and ends on the evening of Easter Sunday. Though chronologically three days, they are liturgically one day unfolding for us the unity of Christ's Paschal Mystery. The single celebration of the Triduum marks the end of the Lenten season, and leads to the Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord at the Easter Vigil.
