"99 Luftballons" (99 Balloons) is a protest song by the German band Nena. It evokes the madness of the Cold War and the arms race that the whole world feared. With this feeling of revolt and exasperation, Nena created this anthem, first in German, then in English as #99RedBalloons. The story tells how 99 balloons float in the sky and are mistaken by the military for an attack. Through a process of escalation, the army and all its weaponry are mobilized to neutralize the balloons, triggering a gigantic, destructive explosion that devastates the planet. This 80s hit propelled Nena to second place on the French Top 50 and remains their biggest hit (by far).
