SOUNDBITE (English) Ban Ki-moon, UN Secretary-General (flanked by South Sudan's Foreign Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin): ++AUDIO AS INCOMING++ "The people of this land suffered decades of bloody civil war. Yet over the last two years the nightmare has returned with a vengeance. Killings, rape, children forced into becoming soldiers, massive human rights violations, and epic corruption. Over two million people have been forced from their homes. Some 200,000 people are being protected in our own camps. More than two years ago we opened our gate to provide sanctuary. I am proud of that action. By doing so, thousands of lives were saved. All parties must respect these sites. Attacks against civilians, peacekeepers and UN premises, such as in Malakal last week, violate humanitarian international law and must stop." 4. Ban and Kiir shaking hands STORYLINE: UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met the President of South Sudan, Salva Kiir, and the country's rebel leader on Thursday, urging them both to quickly establish a transitional government of national unity. Kiir this month appointed rebel leader Riek Machar as vice president, but Machar has yet to return to South Sudan, citing security concerns. More than two years of fighting in South Sudan has killed tens of thousands and displaced two million people. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: [email protected] (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
