Cast of the latest 'Star Wars' movie attend press conference
(9 Dec 2015) ABRAMS ON HIS STAND-ALONE 'STAR WARS' Director J.J. Abrams insists that movie fans who are not familiar with the "Star Wars" series will still be able to fully enjoy "The Force Awakens." The director attended a press conference held in Seoul on Wednesday (9 DEC. 2015) with cast members John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver also in attendance. "I knew this will be the first 'Star Wars' movie for a lot of people. And it was really important that you love the characters, the new characters and not have to study 'Star Wars,' or have memorized, or even seen it before to follow the story of Daisy's character and of John's character," said Abrams. But that's not to say the latest movie in the franchise doesn't look back. "It was our responsibility to go backwards in order to go forwards - to embrace what has come before, the feeling of that amazing place, the universe that George Lucas created, but (we) use that DNA, to tell a brand new story." Daisy Ridley plays Rey - a human female scavenger in the world of Jakku, 30 years after the Battle of Endor. She talked about the comparisons between her character and Carrie Fisher's iconic Princess Leia. "It's very exciting to be compared to Princess Leia because she has paved the way for badass women. But I think Rey is very different from Leia. She does not come from privilege, she has not come from loyalty, She's just a young woman trying to make her way with no help and no support, I guess, from what being a princess would give her." Adam Driver, who plays the role of Kylo Ren in the new adventure, has spent much of his career working in indie movies. He was excited to take part in such a large-scale blockbuster. "You know what? I didn't have to bring my own costume or they actually had food to feed to while we were shooting," joked the actor. "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" will premiere in South Korea on December 17th.
