UK govt on NIreland agreement, dropping legislation
(8 Dec 2020) Minister for the Cabinet Office Michael Gove said Tuesday that a UK-EU trade deal was in "all of our interests", but that it couldn't come at any price. The leaders of both Britain and the European Union are now set to meet in the next 24 hours for a final push at a Brexit deal. Both sides have warned that the chances of a post-Brexit trade deal by the end of the year deadline are slipping away. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted Tuesday that she looked forward to meeting UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson for talks. Johnson's office confirmed the two leaders would hold a dinner meeting later this week. On Tuesday, Gove and European Commission Vice President Maros Sefcovic said they had reached an agreement on how trade to and from Northern Ireland would work and whether there is an overarching U.K.-EU trade deal. Britain said as a result it would scrap its controversial Internal Market Bill.
