"Baptism: Water & Spirit" The Chew vol 23-141, a Quill Organic Ministry
Welcome to The Chew, where we ask the question: Are we choosing The Way of Jesus or are we choosing our own way? Mark 1:7-8, we read this about John the Baptist, “and this was his message: after me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. 8I baptize you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.” John is preaching water baptism and repentance. Jesus will be preaching baptism of the Holy Spirit. Let’s look at John 3:5-8, “Jesus answered, “Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.” N.T. Wright’s comment on these two baptisms; “Water and spirit’ here must mean the double baptism: baptism in water, which brings people into the kingdom-movement begun by John the Baptist and continued by Jesus’ disciples (3:22; 4:1–2), and baptism in the spirit, the new life, bubbling up from within, that Jesus offers, which is the main thing that this whole book is about.” With repentance of our sins comes God’s forgiveness and the gift of the Holy Spirit. Baptism in the Spirit is the witness of our new life in Christ Jesus and water baptism is our profession of faith in Christ & unity with the Body of Christ, His church. Do I understand water baptism unites me with the church of Jesus Christ? Do I baptism with the Holy Spirit brings forth the spring of life from within? Do I understand as God’s child in Christ Jesus that this well-spring of life needs to overflow as a witness to the world? What action will I take today as led by the Holy Spirit? Am I, are we choosing the Way of Jesus that leads to life or our own way? Share in the comments or send me a private message or email me: [email protected] I look forward to hearing from you.
