《미술로, 세계로》 전시는 1970년대 후반 국립현대미술관 국제미술 소장품 수집의 출발점을 되짚어보는 데서 시작합니다. 1980-90년대를 관통했던 ‘세계화’ 라는 시대적 맥락 속에서 국립현대미술관 국제미술 소장품의 수집배경과 의의를 찾아가는 데 주력했습니다. 1978년부터 2000년까지 1980, 90년대에 수집된 다양한 국적의 해외작가 96명의 조각, 드로잉, 회화, 판화 등 104점을 만나볼 수 있습니다. .처음으로 관람객에게 공개되는 초창기 수집작품과 마지막으로 전시된지 30년여만에 처음으로 수장고 밖을 벗어나 전시에 출품되는 것도 상당수입니다. 88 서울올림픽 개최 소식이 전해지면서, 사회 전반의 국제화를 향한 열기가 높아졌습니다. 미술계에서도 한국미술의 해외 진출에 대한 관심이 뜨거워지면서 해외미술의 국내 유입도 다양한 방식과 경로로 확장되고 있었습니다. 이런 분위기는 1990년대 들어서면서부터, 보다 적극적인 국제교류로 이어졌고, 국제적인 명성을 지닌 외국 작가들의 작품도 수집되기 시작했습니다. 이번 전시는 1990년대까지 국내외 모두에서 두드러졌던 세계화 현상에 주목하고 그가운데 국립현대미술관에서 국제미술 소장품이 수집된 맥락을 살펴보면서 그 과정에서 새롭게 발견하거나 되새겨야 할 정보를 담고자 했습니다. 《미술로, 세계로》 전시의 제목은 1988년 서울올림픽 개막식 개회선언에서 사마란치 국제올림픽위원회(IOC) 위원장이 한국어로 외친 구호 “서울은 세계로, 세계는 서울로”에서 가져온 것입니다. The exhibition To the World Through Art begins with a retrospect of the late 1970s, when the MMCA first began collecting works from around the globe. Featured in this exhibition are 104 works by 96 artists of various nationalities acquired between 1978 and 2000, including sculptures, paintings, drawings, and prints. Most of these works are being unveiled to the public for the first time since their acquisition, and many others are being removed from storage for the first time in over 30 years. With the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea was flooded with the spirit of globalization. The art scene was no different. It began seeking opportunities to introduce Korean art overseas and to diversify the routes and methods through which art from around the world could enter the country. This exhibition overviews the “globalization fever” of the 1980s and 1990s as a way of examining the context in which the international artworks in the MMCA’s collection were acquired. Along the way, it presents information that has been newly uncovered or is worthy of recall.
