Holi: The Festival of Colors, Love, and Joy Holi, one of the most vibrant and joyful festivals in India, is celebrated with enthusiasm across the country and in many parts of the world. Known as the Festival of Colors, it marks the arrival of spring and the victory of good over evil. The festival usually falls in March, according to the Hindu lunar calendar, on the full moon day of Phalguna month. Significance of Holi Holi has deep cultural and religious significance. The most famous legend associated with the festival is that of Prahlada and Holika. According to Hindu mythology, the demon king Hiranyakashipu wanted everyone to worship him, but his son Prahlada remained devoted to Lord Vishnu. Angered by this, Hiranyakashipu asked his sister Holika, who had a boon to withstand fire, to sit in flames with Prahlada on her lap. However, due to divine intervention, Holika was burned to ashes, while Prahlada was unharmed. This story symbolizes the victory of good over evil, and on the eve of Holi, people celebrate Holika Dahan, where bonfires are lit to signify the burning of evil forces. How is Holi Celebrated? Holi is a two-day festival: Holika Dahan (Chhoti Holi) – The night before Holi, people gather to light bonfires, sing, dance, and pray for prosperity while burning effigies symbolizing Holika. Rangwali Holi (Dhulandi) – The next day, people celebrate by throwing colors (gulal) at each other, dancing to music, and enjoying sweets and festive drinks like thandai and bhang. Traditional Sweets & Drinks Holi is also known for its delicious treats, including: Gujiya – A sweet dumpling filled with khoya and dry fruits. Thandai – A spiced milk-based drink, sometimes infused with bhang (cannabis). Malpua – A deep-fried dessert soaked in sugar syrup. Holi Around the World Though primarily an Indian festival, Holi is also celebrated in Nepal, Mauritius, Trinidad & Tobago, the USA, the UK, and other countries with significant Indian communities. In recent years, Holi festivals have gained popularity worldwide as cultural events filled with colors, music, and joy.
