On this day in 1960, Pilot Francis Gary Powers was charged with espionage by the Soviet Union after his U2 Spy Plane was shot down. Here's how Movietone reported on the incident that led to his capture. Our pictures show a display in Moscow, and what's alleged to be the wreckage of the "U2" spy plane, which Russia claims to have shot down by rocket. This display includes photographs of the "suicide needle" and other equipment, alleged to have been carried by the pilot. Here is Captain Powers (seen in a home movie film taken some time ago).
