Proper occlusion, the TMJ and load testing The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) acts like a hinge, connecting your jawbone to your skull. You have one joint on each side of your jaw. TMJ disorders (temporomandibular disorder or TMD ) can cause all kinds of symptoms that will vary from person to person. Some of the side effects of TMD are pain in jaw joint, muscles soreness, worn or broken teeth, fractures, damaged dental work, tooth shifting, teeth grinding at various times of the day or night.
