It worked for 1983’s cult hit Sleepaway Camp, just as it worked for 1999’s found footage classic The Blair Witch Project and 2002’s gory Cabin Fever. That said, not all horror movies set in the woods are designed to be scary. No, some can actually subvert the genre by leaning more into the comedy or action side of things, as happened in 2011’s The Cabin in the Woods or 1987’s Predator. For the most part however, they are designed to strike fear into the hearts of audiences as we can all imagine what it would be like to be out there in the middle of nowhere by ourselves.
